Design Action Collective began in 2002 as an independent design and communications spin-off of Inkworks Press Collective. This has allowed us to better serve the movement for social justice by expanding our design capabilities to provide web and other interactive and "new media" services, and continue to expand to include strategic communications and messaging.

Since the founding of Design Action, we have grown to be a multi-lingual, diverse 9-person shop. Our members have come to Design Action as activists and organizers within the social justice movement, and with the desire to offer our skills as designers to the progressive movement.

Design Action is a worker-owned and managed cooperative and a union shop, affiliated with Communication Workers of America, AFL-CIO. We are also active members of Graphic Alliance, the Network of Bay Area Worker Cooperatives, and the U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives

design actionAs part of the movement for peace and justice, Design Action supports all efforts to bring about progressive social change by providing high quality graphic design and visual communications services to progressive organizations. With this in mind, our "Points of Political Unity" give direction to our work. These points are by no means exhaustive, and are just meant as a rough guide.

Design Action is part of the movement for peace and justice. We support all efforts to bring about progressive social change. We make this tangible by providing high quality graphic design and visual communications services to progressive organizations.

Design Action is a spin-off from the Inkworks Press collective. Historically, Inkworks comes from the part of the progressive movement which has been most influenced by Marxism. As Inkworks grew, it gained input from other progressive ideological and political perspectives. Design Action is the product of this new generation. This has not altered our belief that capitalism is an inherently exploitative and alienating system and that socialism presents a positive alternative. For us the idea of socialism, a society which places human concerns above the pursuit of profit, still stands as a powerful vision of what society can be.
