Un malato di cuore

A heart patient

come diavolo fanno a riprendere fiato.

quelle sue cosce color madreperla

col cuore ormai sulle labbra,

A heart patient

"I began to dream myself with them
then the soul suddenly took flight. "

As a boy spy on the boys play
to the rhythm of your heart sick fool
and you get the urge to go out and try
what you are missing to run to the lawn,
and you keep the desire, to think and stay in touch
how the hell do they catch their breath.

Men feel the time wasted
to make you narrate the life eyed
and never be able to drink the cup in one gulp
but in small sips interrupted,
and never be able to drink the cup in one gulp
but in small sips interrupted.

Yet a smile I've got
and still returns every summer
when I drove or was perhaps driven
to count the hair with sweaty hands.

I do not think I asked promises to his eyes,
I do not think I chose silence or voice,
when the heart is stunned and now no, I do not remember
if he was too shocked or too happy,

and his heart went mad and now no, I do not remember,
from which horizon sfumasse light.

And among the show sweet grass
between long strokes ended up on the face,
pearl-colored ones her thighs
were perhaps a flower is not caught.

But yes I remember I kissed her
now my heart on my lips,
but I kissed her, by God, yes I remember,
and my heart remained on the lips.

"And the soul suddenly took flight
but I would not dream with them
no you are unable to dream with them. "

Spoon River Anthology (1915) - Edgar Lee Masters (1869-1950).

Translation into Italian by Fernanda Pivano

Francis Turner

I could not run or play in boyhood.
In manhood I could only sip the cup,
Not drink-
For scarlet-fever left my heart diseased.
Yet I lie here
Soothed by a secret none but Mary knows:
There is a garden of acacia,
Catalpa trees, and arbors sweet with vines--
There on that afternoon in June
By Mary's side--
Kissing her with my soul upon my lips
It suddenly took flight.

Francis Turner

Io non potevo correre né giocare
quand'ero ragazzo.

Non al denaro non all'amore né al cielo (Not to Money, Not to Love, Nor to Heaven) is an album released by Fabrizio De André. It was issued in 1971. It is a concept album based on the Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters. The co-author of the music is composer Nicola Piovani, who later won an Academy award for his soundtrack for Roberto Benigni's Life is beautiful. The title itself is a citation from the first poem in the Spoon River Anthology, The Hill:

Drinking, rioting, thinking neither of wife nor kin,
Nor gold, nor love, nor heaven?

Francis Turner is the character of the Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters who made a breathtaking impression on Fernanda Pivano, translator of the work of Edgar Lee Master in Italian. She herself she had a great friendship with De André, who took up the book and began working in 1970 on this masterpiece.

A Heart Patient is the fifth track on the album. The character tells of his life (all the characters of Spoon River are dead and buried on the hill), passed in childhood to observe other children playing and running in the meadow, as an adult to reflect on the past to be "telling the life from the eyes." No sentence could ever express in a more dense and poetic such a feeling. This is the great talent of De André. The patient meets with his death after meeting a woman who is still holding in his memories: an expression, a feeling of joy and love at the same time in the kiss, as if wanting to shout to the world, a dazement followed by a light unknown.
