It belonged to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Over the centuries, it was occupied by many different people. Its population is a little less than 1.5 million people.

Because of its rough terrain and unproductive soil, The Marche is not one of the most agriculturally advanced regions of Italy. Wheat, olives, corn, and fodder are abundant.

The Marche is known for Vitellone Bianco dell’Appennino Centrale, highly prized white veal. And what a selection of fish and seafood is available, including lobster, relatively rare in Italy.

 There is some industry, in particular paper, chemicals, petro-chemicals, and pharmecuticals.

The Marche devotes about sixty thousand acres to grapevines, it ranks 12th among the 20 Italian regions. Its total annual wine production is about 48 million gallons, giving it a 10th place. About 38% of the wine production is red, leaving 62% for white. The region produces 13 DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine. Conero and Vernaccia di Serrapetrona are DOCG wines, in which the G stands for Garantita, but there is no guarantee that these wines are truly superior. About 20% of wine from The Marche carries the DOC or DOCG designation. The Marche is home to about two and a half dozen major and secondary grape varieties, with a few more white varieties than red ones.

International white grape varieties include Trebbiano, and to a lesser extent Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The best known strictly Italian white variety is Verdicchio. The Veernaccia variety is found in one of the DOCG wines.

Widely grown somewhat international red grape varieties include Sangiovese, an Italian variety grown elsewhere, including California. The international red grape varieties grown to a lesser extent include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. The best-known strictly Italian red variety is Montepulciano. Another red variety is Lacrima, whose name means tears.

Before reviewing the wine from The Marche and Italian cheese that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region. Start with Brodetto; Fish Soup (containing over a dozen types of fish). Then enjoy Vincigrassi; Lasagna with Truffles, Prosciutto, and Cream. And for dessert, indulge yourself with a Crostata di Ricotta; Ricotta Tart.

Let’s start with by quoting the marketing materials. “This marvelous blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano would be great with steaks or venison. The aromas suggest cherry, allspice, oak, and cinnamon. It is dry, supple, smooth, medium-bodied, international in style.”

I read somewhere “A softer version of Chianti.” You can’t believe everything that you read, I felt the opposite.

The first quote should have said Montepulciano and Sangiovese, as this wine contains more of the first variety than the second, as indicated by the back label (and the taste).

The initial pairing was with whole wheat spaghetti in a spicy tomato and meat sauce. The wine was tannic and acidic, with a plumy flavor. It held up well. I next tried it with a slow-cooked beef stew and potatoes. When it didn’t have the strong spices to bail it out, this wine was harsh. But as it breathed it became somewhat softer. It probably should have been decanted.

I next tried the Rosso Piceno with beef ribs, potatoes, and green beans in tomato sauce. The harshness was confirmed, as was its plumy flavor. The last meat meal was with slow-cooked meat balls, potatoes, and eggplant in tomato sauce. The wine tasted of dark fruit, but was not really pleasant. I was able to pair it with more meals than usual, precisely because I didn’t have any desire for refilling my glass.

The best-known cheese in The Marches is Casciotta d’Urbino, made from a combination of sheep’s milk and cow’s milk. None is available in my part of the world, so I settled for two cheeses, Pecorino Toscano from neighboring Tuscany, and Isola from relatively faraway Sicily. My Pecorino Toscano was getting a bit strong but went well with the wine. It nutty, sharp flavor was a fine match for the wine’s fruit. Isola is a Sicilian fresh cheese made from sheep’s milk. It is powerful, strong smelling, and strong tasting. In its presence, the wine was nice and fruity.

Final verdict. This wine is too expensive for an accompaniment to strong cheeses, and spaghetti in a spicy sauce. I don’t plan on buying it again.

Verdicchio is the plenipotentiary of the wines of this pleasant Adriatic region, whose long-time devotion to whites no longer obscures the increasing merits of its reds. The Castelli di Jesi DOC zone, covering a vast tract of hills west of the port of Ancona, is the home of the Verdicchio that made an early impression abroad in its green amphora bottles. But recently producers have created a new image of Verdicchio as a white wine of special character that comes across even more convincingly in standard bottles.

Class has risen so steadily that even wine still sold in the hourglass-shaped amphora seems a ctut above the general level of popular whites. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico, has been described as Italy’s premier wine to serve with fish. Some producers make wines that develop such impressive depth and complexity with age that Verdicchio is increasingly ranked among the noblest native white varieties of Italy.

In the region of Marches, Verdicchio di Matelica, grown in limited quantities in a mountainous zone, can have more body and strength than the much better known Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi. Verdicchio from both DOC zones makes good sparkling wine as well, usually by the sealed tank method of fermentation, but also occasionally by the classical method in bottle.

The red wines of the Marches are based chiefly on Sangiovese and Montepulciano – sometimes blended, sometimes not. The most important in terms of volume is Rosso Piceno, dominated by Sangiovese. It comes from a DOC zone covering much of the eastern flank of the region, stretching from the superiore area between Ascoli Piceno and the sea north through the coastal hills to Senigallia.

Rosso Conero, dominated by Montepulciano, has gained even more praise, thanks to the devotion to quality shown by its leading producers. It originates in a zone on the slopes of the Conero massif south of Ancona. Both Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno were habitually made to drink within two to four years, when they are persuasively round and fresh in flavor. But certain producers have made wines that age remarkably well from good vintages – sometimes for well over a decade.

Two unique red wines are gradually gaining more than local reputations: Vernaccia di Serrapetrona, recently promoted to DOCG, and Lacrima di Morro d’Alba. Vernaccia from the village of Serrapetrona may be either dry or sweet but it is always sparkling. Lacrima, a local vine of mysterious origin, makes reds of flavors ranging from fruity dry to mellow sweet.

Sangiovese is prominent in the northern DOC zone of Colli Pesaresi, where wines bear a family resemblance to the reds of neighboring Romagna. Bianchello del Metauro is usually light and zesty but can show style from certain places.

Esino DOC, which coincides with parts of the two Verdicchio zones, provides red and white wines, usually fresh and fruity. The white Falerio dei Colli Ascolani, from hills around Ascoli to the south, can show class when the Pecorino and Passerina varieties.

Although the emphasis remains strongly on native vines, recent results with such outside varieties as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon have shown eminent promise in the temperate hills of the Marches. The regionwide Marches IGT accounts for a major share of production.

The Marche wines match very well the Marche cuisine, with its local recipes.

Mount Conero is the only relief (572 meters) overhanging the sea from Trieste to Gargano, in symbiosis with the towns Ancona and Camerano, and with the sea resorts of Sirolo and Numana, it is the heart of the homonymous Regional Park.

Established in 1987, but managed only since 1991, it is a nature sanctuary extending for 5800 hectares of protected area, with places of great charm: the bay of Portonovo, the beach of the “due sorelle”, the northern view-point, Pian Grande, pian dei Raggetti… 18 hiking routes developing among strawberry trees, brooms, ilex trees, pines, in the magic of the Mediterranean maquis.

The area houses several species of birds, some of them very rare, together with a rich fauna.

The many plants making the Mediterranean maquis are here protected and represent the third part of the whole floristic heritage of Marche. The territory is also rich in artistic evidences: Santa Maria di Portonovo, San Pietro al Conero, the Antiquarium on the Picenic civilization in Numana, and specific and very interesting geological itineraries.

Santa Maria di Portonovo

Set in the green of the Mediterranean maquis and lapped by the blue Adriatic Sea, the Church of Santa Maria di Portonovo, built with the Conero spotless stone, is a jewel of Romanesque architecture with features blending the Greek cross with the shapes of the Latin basilica. It reminds us that in 1034 a Monastery was built in this wonderful place.

The Community of Monks extended its influence in a large area beyond the Castles of Poggio, Camerano, Sirolo, and Numana.

In 1716 Pope Clemente XI entrusted the building of the Watchtower in Portonovo; it is a square building reminding of the 15th-century features and built with the Conero stones and bricks, with a cover used for the stationing of fire-arms. The garrison was useful to sight and stop the raids of pirates and smugglers.

It became the shelter of the poet Adolfo De Bosis; it was also frequented by Gabriele D’Annuzio, and belongs now to his heirs. It houses nowadays cultural initiatives and it can be visited by requesting it in advance.

Napoleonic Fortress

In 1808 the viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy, Eugenio Behauharnais, entrusted the building, in Portonovo bay, of a fortress to stop the landing of the English boats. It was realized by using also the material recovered from the ruins of the Monastery and of the bell tower attached to the Church of Santa Maria.

After a period of neglect and ruin it was rebuilt, respecting the ancient plan, and is today a prestigious tourist structure. It can be visited by previous request.

San Pietro al Conero

At the top of the Conero, among holm oaks and strawberry trees, there is the Church of San Pietro with the monastery, which has nowadays been transformed into a hotel. As a matter of fact, in the Middle Ages the Conero became a place of hermitage and of religious Communities.

The Benedictine monks built two Churches: one at its foot, San Benedetto, and the other one on the top, San Pietro. The Church of San Pietro fell into ruin and was rebuilt by the Camaldolese monks who settled there until 1861.

San Pietro still preserves the shapes and the style of the ancient structure, white and tiny as the Romanesque style wants.

Inside, a central nave with barrel vault and cross vault; the columns and the pillars are adorned with decorated capitals.

Acanthus leaves, pine berries, and floral subjects are woven into the stones.

Under the chorus is hidden the crypt where the relics were preserved. The paths and avenues traced by the Monks can still be gone through and lead to wonderful tours.

Numana and its Antiquarium

Ancient Picenic and then Roman center, its history is largely documented in the Antiquarium and in the National Museum of Ancona. Attic vessels, necklaces, fire-arms, and all the precios things that were found in its necropolis – formed by almost nine hundred graves – are on display in the Antiquarium and “tell” all the evolutionary span of the Picenic civilization from the 7th century till the Roman age.

The exhibition structure (Tel. 071/9330585) is open to the public in Via La Fenice 4, the entrance is free.

According to the tradition, the name Sirolo derives from “Sirio”, a medieval condottiere.

He was given the place where Belisareio built the castle after defeating the Goths in 560. Probably the area had already been settled during the Roman period and depended on the Municipality of Umana (today Numana). The small center, on the Conero slopes, shows unexceptionable medieval evidences and is lit by unique marine foreshortenings. It is the seat of the Consorzio Parco del Conero.

Luigi Paolucci Museum

In Offagna, a small and wonderful medieval municipality situated at a few kilometers from the Park area, the Museum dedicated to the naturalist Luigi Paolucci has been recently inaugurated.

It consists of seven halls where it is possible to study fluvial, coastal, hilly, karstic, and mountain environments, together with the calcareous gorges.

All the Marches, including the Conero, are mentioned and illustrated.
