Garda Trentino Water Sports
Canoeing
|
|
Paddling the waters of Garda in the
morning silence, before the lake has been moved by the
wind, is a very lovely experience. There are many
tourist organisations that offer canoeing. Among them
are the Società Canottieri Virtus Riva, whose
headquarters are located right on the shore of the lake
on Sabbioni Beach. Canottieri Virtus also offers the
possibility of practicing water sports other than on
Garda, such as on Lake Ledro. This lake is an ideal
sight for canoeing, so much so that the regional
managers of the Federazione Italiana Canoa (Italian
Canoeing Federation) have organised a nation-wide event
here.

Windsurfing
|
|
Windsurfing and Garda are an
inseparable duo, as are windsurfing and the Circolo Surf
Torbole (Torbole Surfing Club), a club which initiated
the sport. On some summer days, the sight of more than
one thousand colorful sails ploughing the blue lake is
breathtaking, especially if admired from the surrounding
mountains. On Garda Trentino there are many schools that
teach windsurfing because "flying" on the transparent
waters of Garda is an unforgettable experience!

Sailing
|
|
Sailing is perhaps one of the sports
that can best express its potential on the largest body
of fresh water in Italy. This sport can count on the
unfailing "motor" offered by the winds of the lake,
Pelèr in the morning and Ora in the afternoon. There are
three clubs on the Garda Trentino shores that offer
sailing courses and organise numerous regattas during
the year: the Fraglia della Vela di Riva del Garda, the
Circolo Vela Torbole (Torbole Sailing Club) and the
Circolo Vela Arco (Arco Sailing Club), besides some
private sailing associations whose addresses can be
obtained at the Garda Trentino Tourist Offices (A.P.T.). |
Swimming
|
|
Protected by a provincial law that
prevents motor navigation, Garda is particularly
suitable for swimming. Numerous records have been set in
the blue waters of the lake, one of the most recent
being the cross-lake swim record set in the summer of
2001 by the Trentino Christian Sartori. There are also
numerous swimming facilities, such as the Riva indoor
town swimming pool "E. Meroni", a 25-metre pool with six
lanes. The Associazione Amici Nuoto Riva has the Italian
50-metre backstroke champion Maria Luisa Tavernini also
among its ranks.

Fishing
|
|
Rivers,
torrents, lakes: there is no shortage of places to fish
in Garda Trentino. On the Sarca River there are
characteristic angles, natural gorges not to difficult
to reach, especially in the Marocche territory of Dro.
Here there are ravines of rock where all species of lake
trout find their natural habitat. The gorge of Limarò,
about twenty kilometers from Riva del Garda, is also
very picturesque. It starts in Tione and descends to the
village of Sarche. Since the waters of Lake Garda are
state waters, government fishing licenses, issued by the
Province of residency, are valid. Foreigners need a
fishing license - 20.66 Euro - which has unlimited
validity nationwide. For other lakes and rivers in the
Trentino area daily permits, which can be obtained on
the spot, are also necessary.

Canyoning
|
|
A canyoning descent is an exciting
and unforgettable experience for those who are curious,
love the magic of water and uncontaminated nature. It is
not necessary to be a great swimmer in order to practice
canyoning. However, in order to experience the thrill of
a gorge or a canyon in complete safety, it is important
not to be afraid of the water and to let yourself be
guided by the instructors. Canyoning began in Upper
Garda in 1993 thanks to Canyon Adventures, the first
agency in Garda and in Italy to specialize in this
sport. The headquarters is in Torbole.

Kitesurfing
|
|
Started a few years ago, it is the
sport of the moment-the ideal combination between
paragliding and windsurfing. It was launched at Garda by
one of the world-wide windsurfing myths, the American
Robby Naish, who tested all his products here. The board
used is shorter than the one normally used for
windsurfing, but the "driving force" is still the wind,
which is harnessed in a kite that is actually a small
paraglider. Today there are numerous kitesurfing
enthusiasts, especially in the Malcesine area, where
there is a club dedicated to it:
www.kitesurfingclub.com.
There are also opportunities to practise this sport in
Garda Trentino.

The
area of Port San Nicolò, in Riva
del Garda, is famous all over the world
for being an ideal place to perform
dives bringing the lovers of this sport
toward a bottom full of recent history.
The statue of Christ, realized by the
artist Germano Alberti from Riva, is
also found at the bottom of Port San
Nicolò set down at about fifteen meters.
