Valpelline

Valpelline
The village of Valpelline is situated in a hollow, where the
Ollomont and the Valpelline valleys converge. To the
South-east is the Becca di Viou (2856 mt) which divides the
district of Valpelline from the districts of Roisan,
Saint-Christophe, Quart and Nus. On the left orographical
side, at the top of the valley you can see the pyramid of
the Dent d'Hérens (4171 mt). To the north the mountain chain
Morion marks out the boundaries between Valpelline and
Ollomont.
On the north west a ridge created by an old morainic sediment separates Valpelline from the village of
Doues. This impressive mountain chain shelters Valpelline
from the winds. Temperatures in summer are mitigated by
pleasant breezes, while in winter they are rather severe
because of the reduced exposure to the sun.

The district of Valpelline lies at 960 mt.
above sea level and has 554 inhabitants. It has a surface
area of 31, 42 square kilometers and counts 23 hamlets. You
reach Valpelline by leaving the main Great-Saint-Bernard
road n.27, veering right at the Variney crossroads and
taking the road (built in 1865) which runs along the Buthier
river. Beyond the Crousevy bridge you are on the left
orographical side of the Buthier river, and having driven a
few kilometers and passed a wide bend, the distant roofs and
the bell-tower of the village of Valpelline, almost hidden
at the outlet of the Ollomont valley, come into view.
Valpelline is 13 kilometers from Aosta
and is connected to the main town by a bus service.
Oyace
The village of Oyace lies on the right orographical side of the Valpelline
valley along the road connecting Valpelline to Bionaz. Situated
on a rocky rise is the "Tornalla", a particular octagonal tower
which probably dates back to the 12th century.
The territory of Oyace is crossed by one of
the most spectacular stretches of the high mountain route n. 1
"Alta via n. 1" of the Aosta Valley, which passes through the
beautiful valley of Vessona, well known for its unpolluted
environment and for its varied fauna.
Other interesting excursions are those in the
Verdona valley (where there is a chapel dedicated to Notre
Dame-des-Neiges celebrated annually on 5 August) and to Col
Breuson on the other side of the valley.
